The Underwood 'Fun Run' was initially an idea suggested back in 1986. Wanting to make a positive difference for the community. Trying something new & also for a bit of fun the first Underwood Fun Run was suggested.
It was decided in addition to raising funds for the school it would be a good idea to raise money for local worth while causes, this would give a real sense of purpose in "making a difference" in peoples lives, people who we would never meet, people yet to be born, people who needed a helping hand to climb the ladder of life.
The first race took place in the spring of 1987, the village transformed from a quiet back water into a sea of colour as young & old took to the streets with bright smiles as they started to create history.
That first year the 'Mansfield hospital scanner appeal' benefited from the generosity of the community to the sum of £555. To date the run has generated more than £25,000 for charities. This year our chosen charity is the 'Cystic Fibrosis Foundation'. You can find out more on the great work they do by visiting their website which is www.cftust.org.uk
The Underwood Challenge Run 2008 will be our 22nd Road Race. Who would have thought twenty two years later the run would still be going strong. Many of the children who ran all those years ago now have their own children competing.
The run also accommodates the more serious runners as well, many look forward to this annual event & return year after year. We aim to make year 22 even more special with, bigger prizes, more participants, side shows, fun & games.
